Shortly after 3:30 pm Tupelo police officers pulled over a black Honda SUV because the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. The stop occurred in the 200 block of South Gloster. Police discovered during the traffic stop that the passenger, Jasper Copeland, had 2 Municipal Warrants out for his arrest. Police were aware that Copeland had a history of resisting arrest.
While Copeland was exiting the vehicle officers observed him dropping a clear baggy that possibly contained narcotics. As the officers attempted to handcuff Copeland he spun around and started punching at the officers, striking one of them in the face. As the officers struggled with Copeland he managed to get one of his hands on an officer’s holstered weapon. Officers deployed pepper spray and one officer was forced to punch Copeland with his fist in an effort to stop the assault. At one point the officer realized he had handcuffs in his striking hand and he immediately dropped them.
Officers eventually got Copeland on the ground and he continued to resist arrest. Officers managed to eventually get him handcuffed and he was transported to LSO. Once Copeland was at LSO there was concern that he may have ingested narcotics and he was taken to the Emergency Room. Copeland was admitted to the hospital. He also now faces additional charges of possession of felony narcotics and assault on a police officer.
On July 14 Police were notified that Copeland had left the hospital against medical advice. Police completed warrants for simple assault on a police officer and Copeland was served on July 15.
